As my Twitter followers know, I just finished reading a Harry Potter book in Finnish. I love HP books, and revisiting The Prisoner of Azkaban for the third time was really cool. I'm super proud of myself now, because I've read 456 pages in Finnish! ^-^

She, he or hän? Она, он или hän?

  One of the many things I like about the Finnish language is its lack of gender. You don't have to memorize nouns' gender like in German or French. But the most interesting to me is that Finns don't have words for she and he, they only have hän.

  Люблю финский язык за многое, например, за то, то в нём нет рода. Не надо заучивать род существительных, как в немецком или французском. Ну а самое интересное для меня — у финнов нет слов она и он, есть только hän.

  I'm glad there are so many blogs about language learning out there – every time I read one, I get ideas and inspiration. Recently I've read this article: 10 Tips to get out of a language learning rut. The first advice it offers is changing up your routine.

  Как здорово, что есть так много блогов про изучение языков — каждый раз, заходя туда, я набираюсь идей и вдохновения. Недавно я прочла статью 10 Tips to get out of a language learning rut (10 способов выбраться из языковой «колеи»). Первым советом идёт «Изменить рутину».

Learning Finnish and Japanese. Учу финский и японский

  It snows almost every day here, on the south of Finland, and snow piles along the roads are giant. But what I want to talk about isn't weather. It's languages. Again. :)

  За окном снег кружит чуть ли не каждый день тут, на юге Финляндии. Сугробы у дорог выросли гигантские. Но поговорить я сегодня хотела не о погоде, а о языках. Опять. :)

  Here is a little paper that shows standard levels of language proficiency. A1.1 is a beginner, and C2.2 is native level, super-duper fluency. I look at it, and it's like a guiding light for me – here is how I progress in Finnish, little by little. I can understand Finnish on the level of B2 I think, but my speaking is not so good. So I decided to make Finnish my priority for some time.

  На этой маленькой бумажке показаны стандартные уровни владения языком. А1.1 это начинающий, а С2.2. - уровень человека, для кого это родной язык, т. е. супер-пупер свободное владение. Я смотрю на бумажку, и она будто путеводная звезда — вот как я улучшаю свой финский, шаг за шагом. Понимаю я финский, пожалуй, на уровне В2.2., а вот говорю гораздо хуже. Так что сейчас финский у меня в приоритете на некоторое время.

Translation games. Игры переводов

  Today I wanted to do something silly. :) If you ever used machine translation you know that the results can be weird. For example Google Translate – surely it's useful when you get a comment in the language you don't speak, but it can't translate all the nuances. I decided to try this: I write a text in one language, then translate it using Google to some other language, then the result gets translated to one more language, etc, and then I'll compare the final result with the original text. Some kind of Chinese whispers game.

 Сегодня мне захотелось немного подурачиться :). Если вы когда-нибудь пользовались машинным переводом, то вы знаете, что результат выходит какой угодно. Тот же Google Translate может быть полезен, если вы получили комментарий на незнакомом языке, но вот перевести все тонкости он не всегда способен. Я решила сделать вот что: написать текст на одном языке, затем перевести через Гугл на другой язык, затем полученный результат — на третий и т.д., а заключительный текст перевести обратно на первый язык и сравнить с оригиналом. Этакий испорченный телефон. 

We'll start from a Russian text, and then there'll be English.

Ru-Fin-Jap

  Этот пост напомнил мне о русских словах, звучащих похоже на японские. Да и многие финские слова звучат по-японски. Конечно, они неидеально совпадают по звучанию и значения у них другие, но всё равно, на мой взгляд это очень забавно. В конце концов японский совсем не родственен финскому и русскому. Можете назвать это совпадениями, а по мне — так это весело :).

  This post reminded me that some Russian words sound a bit like Japanese. And quite many Finnish words sound Japanese too. Of course they're not exactly the same and have different meanings, but still, I find it amusing – after all, Japanese language isn't related to Russian or Finnish. Call it coincidence if you like, I'll call it fun ^.^

табун (tabun – horse herd)

кусака (kusaka – biter, that's how I call my plush dog ^^)

кочан (kochan, read as kachan - cabbage-head)

куда (kuda - where)

яма (yama – pit, hollow)

кара (kara – punishment, judgment)

кума (kuma - godmother)

няня (nyanya - nanny)

чан (chan – tub, water tank)

кура (kura – chicken, colloquial)

К примеру, «яма» - это по-японски гора, а «кабан» - сумка :).

For example, yama means mountain in Japanese, and kaban means a bag ^.^
