Happy Penguin Awareness Day!

January 20th is Penguin Awareness Day. p(^-^)q Which means that my Penny is gonna be the queen of the day. Let's find out all about these curious, (mostly) southern birds!

First of all, penguins can't fly, but they have great flippers for swimming...

...and making cute motions like in this video.

Penguins have thick, insulating feathers, so they don't need scarves to keep warm.

Well, you can always wear something just for style.

There are about 17-20 penguin species on Earth now. Penny is an emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri).

“You can call me your highness.”

Wikipedia says that “In hunting, the species can remain submerged up to 18 minutes, diving to a depth of 535 m (1,755 ft). It has several adaptations to facilitate this, including an unusually structured hemoglobin to allow it to function at low oxygen levels, solid bones to reduce barotrauma, and the ability to reduce its metabolism and shut down non-essential organ functions.”
Wow!

Here is a baby emperor:

Penguins have enemies in the wild, like leopard seals, but this baby seal is a friendly one.

Sadly, penguins don't get to hang out with cute polar bears because those live too far north.
Unless they are plush...

Penguins are very curious birds.

Checking stuff is important!

In short, penguins are amazing! ^^ Happy Penguin Awareness Day!
