The Moon and Jupiter

Accidentally took a rather fancy photo of the Moon using field binoculars – no editing!

My attempt at photographing Jupiter was less successful…

Lunar Date [Daily Photo #848]

We went out to look at bats and the lunar eclipse, so here are some photos we took!

A bat catching insects above water.

Starflower [Daily Photo #601]

Sometimes sunflowers turn into starflowers...

Moon [Daily Photo #583]

Fog, clouds and moon.

Red Sun [Daily Photo #565]

Yesterday the sun looked unusually red high in the sky, due to dust from Sahara and particles from forest fires in Portugal and Spain. The particles in the air scattered the blue colour out, leaving only reds and yellows. It looked so strange, as if the sun was having a second sunrise in the middle of the sky – the reds were very similar to the sunrise/sundown reds.

Meet Deneb & Co [Daily Photo #234]

Oh hey, I have a new toy! :)

It took a looong time to find fitting names for these little friends! My mind kept thinking of space and motherships, so eventually I thought of stars, blue and white giants, and then it dawned on me: there's a swan constellation, Cygnus! And so I named the mama swan Deneb (that's α Cygni, by the way, and it's a blue-white supergiant and the 19^th brightest star in the night sky). As for the kids, I named them Kepler, Hubble and Chandra. ;p

☆* Sailor Moon in my life *☆

When I was a ~10 years old girl, Sailor Moon came to Russia. It was one of the first anime shown there. I loved it from the very first episode I saw. Sailor Moon aired on weekends, and if I managed to wake up early, I could watch the same episode twice – at breakfast and lunch. I remember trying to eat soup when something tragic happened in the end of season 1, I think the soup was suddenly salty.

Quotes: The Farthest Shore (Earthsea)

Quotes from The Farthest Shore by Ursula Le Guin

'He does have a Gontish accent.'

'If I could speak to dragons in their own language,' Arren said, 'I wouldn't care about my accent.'

When I was young, I had to choose between the life of being and the life of doing. And I leapt at the latter like a trout to a fly. But each deed you do, each act, binds you to itself and to its consequences, and makes you act again and yet again. Then very seldom do you come upon a space, a time like this, between act and act, when you may stop and simply be. Or wonder who, after all, you are.

'In Enlad,' said Arren after a while, 'we have a story about the boy whose schoolmaster was a stone.'

'Aye?.. What did he learn?'

'Not to ask questions.'

Travel via books. Путешествуя через книги

Inspired by Rurousha :)

One of the reasons why I love science fiction and fantasy is because they let me see amazing, unreal places. I like to travel via books. How else would I see faraway stars and planets no one ever visited? Lands long forgotten, cultures unknown? Of course I don't mind realistic settings too. Master and Margarita took me to old Moscow and Biblical places, Sherlock Holmes stories showed me Britain, and Matsuo Bashō – Japan. I love when it's autumn or winter in the books, and lots of nature. Countryside is better than urban settings, and animals there are always welcome.

Drawing Challenge

One of my goals this year is to draw more often. It's very easy to lose your skills if you don't practice. So I decided that from now on every week I'll be posting a drawing here. This is a good stimulus for me. I actually recommend it to you – if you want to make some changes like learn something, make gym regularly, read more, etc., posting about your progress is very useful. Your readers will hold you accountable. If you have to post a photo of a new meal you learned to cook every week, this might force you to learn new recipes much better that simply telling yourself that you're gonna do it one day, maybe.

So, I don't know what I'll draw next week or the week after that, but this makes it more fun :). And today's picture is...

Я не знаю, что я нарисую на следующей неделе или неделе после, но так и интереснее :). Сегодняшняя картинка...

Today we went shopping pretty late, and the sky was full of stars. Huge Moon shone there like a queen. When we came back I took my sweet binocular and went outside to explore the sky. It was freezing cold, but worth it. This is for you:

See that bright dude below Moon? That's Jupiter. Isn't it cute that giant Jupiter looks so tiny from Earth? To my surprise I also saw one of Galilean moons, but the moon didn't introduce itself so I don't know who exactly I saw. Anyway, I'm so happy! There were so many stars! Staaaaaaars ^___^
