When You Can't Buy… [Daily Photo #512]

When you can't buy something, take a photo! =D I'm collecting Schleich animal figurines, but I can only buy a new one once I've written a certain amount of words, and I don't have enough for a new toy yet. (My previous reward was this donkey.) I'm working on 3+ things right now, veeeery irregularly, but these rewards help! What better way to stimulate my productivity than a promise of a toy? =D

Tapiola [Daily Photo #113]

Today I worked on my book in a café for the first time! Despite the fact that I'd slept for only 2,5 hours, I managed to brainstorm a scene and came to a very important conclusion: it needs crossdressing. =D Everything is better with crossdressing!

My 2015

Last year was full of changes and sometimes things were quite overwhelming and intense but overall 2015 was awesome!

In no particular order...

☆
There was a lot of progress in art – fanart, animals, portraits. I'm now braver to try drawing challenging new things! It has always been my dream to become a professional artist, be it drawing or writing. And I feel I finally worked hard for that last year! I want to keep treating drawing as something serious and not just a fun hobby.

A little bit about my writing

Sometimes you don't know you need something till you get it.

Writing is a solitary process. You scribble in the middle of the night, you daydream figuring out all the plot points and character development, you draw your characters, you edit... all of that alone.

And then you get stuck. And you try to find solutions to your plot problems but nothing seems to work. Or you lose inspiration and get distracted with non-writing things. Sure, reading interviews with writers or articles on writing is inspiring, it feels good and I often get ideas! But... I rarely do any actual writing afterwards... ^^'

February reading: oceans, Pluto and cute baby bats

Quite a delicious list of everything I've read in February introduced to you by the Spotted Dragon!

5 (Naoko Takeuchi “Sailor Moon” vol. 5) [Japan]
Wu Ming-Yi “The Man with the Compound Eyes” [Taiwan]
Issui Ogawa “The Lord of the Sands of Time” [Japan]
Jeff VanderMeer “Wonderbook: The Illustrated Guide to Creating Imaginative Fiction” [USA]
6 (Naoko Takeuchi “Sailor Moon” vol. 6) [Japan]
Nnedi Okorafor “Lagoon” [USA]

Wonderbook
At first I got this book from the library, but soon I bought my own copy. Wonderbook is a cool illustrated guide for the writers of speculative fiction. Really fun quirky drawings there!

Hamsters! God I love this manga about the cutest (and silliest) balls of fur who eat too much and frolic adorably.

I Can Hear Them...

I don't know how other storytellers work, but I know for sure that I do not invent my characters. Basically, it happens like this:

A glimpse of a character appears in my head.
It grows.
It soon occupies all my being.
It starts hanging wallpapers and decorating its new home in my head.
It starts talking to me.
Tells me a little about their habits.
Their hair colour.
Some teaser from their past.

Interesting Spring.

This year I'm trying all sorts of new things. In winter I explored African cuisine, studied Greek alphabet and tried charcoal drawing. My spring was fun too, and here is what I was doing.

March

I tried painting on a touchscreen with my fingers. Felt weird. :D

Then we had a week of Finnish cuisine (a post to follow). We eat lots of Asian food and other international stuff, so it was interesting to try being more Finnish for a change. :D

In the week of Earth Hour I decided to enjoy candles a bit more than just for one night. I had candles every evening. Reading in candlelight is so nice! When was the last time you read a book in candlelight? ;)

Ivan Yefremov

As promised, I started posting photos from our zoo trip here.

Today I wanted to share a quote with you. Ivan Yefremov was a big name in Soviet science fiction. He is one of the most important and dear authors to me. I tried my best to translate his thoughts, but it's hard. For example Russian светозарный means both “glowing, radiant” and “full of joy, happiness”. I wish you could read the original text...

“Beauty is a glowing bridge to the future, which every science fiction artist should travel on. It is the artist's quest to collect little by little all the beauty that is scattered now on our planet, to collect, summarize, concentrate it, while remembering about the heroic symphony of tomorrow. Portrayal of the future is a colossal endeavour of gathering beauty. From the outer space. From the human soul. From the reflection of sun on water. From stars. From clouds.”
- Ivan Yefremov

I was very happy to see posters of these movies today. I can't wait for their premieres ^.^ Is there any movie you're waiting for?

The Cake and the Door.

Yesterday my husband and I celebrated five years since he became a vegetarian. And don't look at me like that, he became vegetarian a month BEFORE we met :). We met online and at first didn't talk about food, so I discovered this not right away. When I did, I just melted :). I never actually dreamed of a vegetarian boyfriend, it's a rare species in Russia, though I couldn't imagine a relationship with someone who doesn't feel pity for animals. But thanks to Gandalf, my Finn and I found each other despite many kilometers that were between us.

We were lazy to bake anything, but we also didn't want to buy a cake from a shop, loaded with sugar and bad calories. So I made a cake from what I could find at home :). Cake wafers are from shop. I spread strawberry jam and soy whipped cream on the bottom layer, ground almond, cream and a few blueberries on the next one, only cream on the layer after that and cream with freshly picked wild strawberries on the top. :)

Nails, cats and a parking lot

Some thoughts :)

Just a random photo.

Nails
A few years ago my friend was obsessed with my nails. They were not good enough for her, and she was begging me to let her fix 'em. Okay, I let her do the nail file magic to my claws. And what did I get? Almost on the next day my now better looking nails started flaking! It never ever happens to them. Maybe they're not made of iron but of something like that anyway. My conclusion? Don't listen to people with priorities different from yours :). Everybody is ready to give you advice, but they live a different life. I like my nails strong, even if – oh my god! - not perfectly looking. If you don't live your life the way you want, who else will do it for you?
(Please don't send me tips on nail filing, I don't have time for this stuff ^.^ Thanks.)

Snow & Soba

Hurray hurray, last night I finally rewrote a scene from my manuscript. I turned four pages into two, yay! For some reasons writing fiction makes me so tired. I can make a few blog posts and feel OK, but after just half an hour of writing my book I'm all exhausted and super hungry ^.^ So I didn't clean the mess on my desk last night, and that's what was waiting for me in the morning...

Those chaotic artists :)

Soon after breakfast I was already hungry for a dinner (I have no idea why I'm still not round like Pirozhok). I opened a book about Japan on a random page, and there were noodles there. Noooooodles.

JRRT

On 3rd of January, 1892 there was born a man whose creations would influence people's lives long after his death. His name was John Ronald Reuel Tolkien.

I think I don't have to tell you what «The Hobbit» and «The Lord of the Rings» are :). I was one of those who fell in love with the world of Middle Earth from the first sight and for forever. Ah, if only I could have Elvish ears! ^^ Back then I had no idea that I got on a magic path...

“And so it begins...

...There's a hole in your mind.”

No, not like that.

And so it begins, and I'm very happy. That's better.

You probably noticed the word «writer» in my blog title. It stands there for something. I wrote my first story almost as soon as I learned how to scribble those clumsy letters. It was about great green dragon big grey-green dino who lost his toy and met a kidnapped princess. Yep, apparently there were princesses in Dinosauria world too. ^_^

Was it about you?

Then I just couldn't stop writing. I still can't. When I grew up a little, I realized that writing was the only thing I wanted to do, nothing else. Well, and I'm not really capable of much else. Maybe I can crochet a little, but I definitely don't want to be doing that for all my life. As for books... This intoxicating feeling of whole worlds living inside you... I don't know what to compare it to. It's even better than good music ^.^
